French Teaching Resources
Below are free French teaching resources for teachers in UK schools to help you save time spent on lesson planning for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4. Primary or secondary school French teachers may find these websites useful for developing their own lesson plans or for signposting their pupils to innovative online content.
Key Stage 1
You can download free French Lesson Plans at the City of Stoke website for the National Languages Strategy. The topics covered include:
- The World
- Eating out
The downloads come in pdf format. There are also songs, stories and useful websites. Great for Key Stage 1 upwards.
The BBC Primary French pages have interactive Flash cartoons that enable pupils to watch and listen to French language scenarios. There are also non-Flash versions for those without the software installed. Topics include introductions, numbers and days of the week. This is suitable for Key Stages 1 and 2.
Key Stage 2
Nine interactive KS2 Whiteboard Resources are included on the Crickweb website. Topics covered include:
- Fruit and vegetables
The CCEA Primary Languages French pages have been developed to help primary school teachers to deliver language teaching. opics include House & Home, Animals and The Weather.
BBC Family French Game includes simple games for adding fun to learning numbers and colours. Suitable for childern who can count to 5.
Key Stage 3
A great resource from the BBC is Talk French which is a video guide to learning the language from beginner through to intermediate level. It is suitable for KS3 upwards and includes vocabulary and grammar games.
Oxfam have a Virtual Journey of France where you can take in the food, culture and 'mode de vie'. It is geared towards 11 and 12 year olds and offers a guide to the country's geography and history. There are interesting pieces of information and stats.
An excellent revision tool is the French Crosswords site to help users improve and test their vocabulary. You can print out the crosswords, so that pupils can complete them offline.
Key Stage 4
The Channel 4 French section is designed for 9 to 13 year olds and includes games based on key topics, such as family, food, colours, numbers, clothing and directions. It is mainly a collection of fun games and activities.
The BBC GCSE Bitesize French site can help you to revise for your GCSE exams with revision and test exercises, as well as tips and advice for speaking, listening, reading and writing.
For intermediate users, Adodoc is a classroom or home study resource that can help pupils to practise their skills and learn about culture, as well as working on French language and comprehension exercises.
