Google Apps are the various online tools that Google has developed to enable collaboration, sharing and visualisation. They include: Google Mail; Google Calendar; Google Docs; Google Sites and other Google applications and services such as Picasa, Google Maps and Google Sketch Up.
When learners have their Google Apps accounts fully integrated with their school network and VLE accounts, the links between the different mediums for ICT based learning become seamless. This makes it easier to track work across different platforms; makes monitoring of progress easier and helps to ensure that learners have full access to all resources no matter whether they're in an IT suite, on a wi-fi connection in a Library, on their PC / laptop at home or checking into their user account on the bus on the way home via a smart phone.
All online tools that enable collaboration between distinct groups of users have some uses in the field of education. Google Apps are no different and have the added benefit of having been optimised for use within educational establishments.
The Google Apps for Education package enables documents or calendars to be shared between different users and allocated by type, age range or permission level. So, for example a Headteacher could share a school events calendar with all members of the school community; a CPD calendar with staff and a Quality Assurance programme with just Heads of Department.
Google Mail can be set up in such a waysthat ‘send to’ privileges are limited and all mails sent by learners can be tracked, and permissions limited, to ensure that the safety of learners at all times.
The ability to select specific groups to share any of these apps with, or to send information to; enables teachers to ensure that guidance is targeted, with ease, to the right groups and helps to ensure that a wide variety of resources are made available through harnessing the multimedia rich nature of cloud computing.
