Top 10 Early Years Teaching Blogs

Whilst taking inspiration from the children you teach is important, it’s also useful to learn from other practitioners. So to help you when the inspirations run dry, we’ve found 10 of the best Early Years teaching blogs for you to read.
1. http://www.earlylearninghq.org.uk/blog/ – A well designed website and blog with loads of good resources for use across the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. Don’t miss out on this, the quality and quantity of downloads available is second to none. The blog is regularly updated to let you know what’s new on the site and best of all it’s completely free with no need to sign up.
2. http://earlyyearslearning.wordpress.com/ – The Early Years Learning blog has good lesson ideas to help promote literacy for young boys and girls. It hasn’t been updated since June but everyone has to have a holiday.
3. http://www.atozphonics.com/phonics-blog.html – A blog devoted to the teaching of phonics. There are some really good ideas and resources to help teachers spice up a subject which many young learners struggle to engage in.
4. http://blog.tpet.co.uk/posts/category/joys-of-eyfs/ – Part of the Teachers Pet website, this blog is dedicated to the Early Years Foundation Stage and Special Educational Needs. It sets itself apart from other blogs with a mixture of good ideas and reflection on the profession itself.
5. http://blog.tpet.co.uk/posts/category/mr-thorne-does-phonics/ – If you teach Early Years phonics and haven’t come across Mr Thorne then track him down as soon as you can. As a Lead Phonics teacher in his local authority, Mr Thorne is an expert in the field and his blog is a treasure trove of activities, resources and activities that helps keep this important area of teaching fresh. With content available on iPhone App Store and BBC iPlayer, his enthusiastic approach embraces ICT and is highly recommended.
6. http://earlyyears.blog.co.uk/ – This blog is written with by a pracitioner with 25 years experience and tackles issues relating to education such as provision for children with special educational needs. There’s also some innovative approaches to teaching such as the use of yoga or music therapy.
7. http://teachingintheearlyyears.blogspot.com/ – The author of this site is based in America but the Early Years focus makes it relevant to any teacher of young children. It’s regularly updated and has plenty of lesson ideas and downloads for you to try with young learners.
8. http://preschoolteachersresource.blogspot.com/ – A blog that’s dedicated to providing resources for Nursery practitioners. Sometimes it can be hard to find web content for this age group so if you work with very young children it could prove very useful.
9. http://abcdoes.typepad.com/ This has loads of information all about the Foundation Stage. It’s easy to navigate and has very good advice on a range of topics. There are some particularly good posts about making the most of your continuous provision. Make sure you don’t miss the planning section which has some helpful downloads.
10 – http://www.preschoolplaybook.com/ – Another site in America but relevant to any Early Years practitioners. This site details one teachers experiences with her class and crams in loads of activities, ideas and insights.
