How to Use ICT in the Literacy Hour

Written by Matthew Coffey   // June 1, 2011   // Comments Off

A series of suggestions about the ways that ICT can be used effectively as part of the Literacy hour:

(in no particular order)

1) Sentence level – use drag and drop to order / re-order words

2) Use a word processor to edit text, highlight key words / word types

3) Use digital recorders to make a record of speaking and listening activities. See this post for examples of how it’s been done effectively by one school.

4) Use radioanywhere to provide pupils with a clear purpose for their writing – ie defined audience and a reason to want to perform to the highest standard.

5) Use digital spelling activities to reinforce pupils ability to spell key words correctly.

6) Have pupils of different ages or abilities working collaboratively to create online displays. One suggestion is outlined in more detail in this post.

7) Use a wiki to demonstrate the effectiveness of editing and refining text. This is a great way of conducting shared writing exercises – which can then be followed up via online homework using the wiki.

8) Webquests can be used to guide pupils through a research based exercise. These can be manipulated to ensure that the pupils are being asked to develop specific skills. For example, this could be developing skim reading by sendingthem to a number of sites in a short space of time to find key facts, or to check the accuracy of provided information.

9) Use digital versions of books as these can provide pupils with audio accompaniment which is very useful if there are a number of new terms being introduced.
