How using a digital camera can bring a VLE to life!

A quick, easy and effective way of getting pupils making use of a VLE on a regular basis is to make use of a digital camera in lessons. Whatever work your class are doing there will be opportunities for you to record their progress, ideas or creations. These can then be quickly uploaded onto your VLE.

Once on the VLE they can be used for a variety of purposes. They can be used as part of a class learning diary, recording their progress through a scheme of work. This can demonstrate real progression over a period of time as the quality of pupil work improves, or a project develops.

The photos can also be utilised for assessment purposes, with the photograph acting as a prompt for pupils to comment on the good features of the work that has been photographed, or offering constructive criticism and ideas about how to develop a piece of work. This allows modelling exercises to be done based on ‘real’ work, ideal in those situations where work has to be carried over to another day.

Taking photographs of activities also helps to create a record of different learning activities that you use, which can then be shown to inspectors, governors, parents etc as examples of the range of things on offer in your school.

A few simple snaps from your camera can also provide the basis of a range of learning resources which can be integrated into your VLE. Photographs of the local area or school grounds can be uploaded into a Wiki, with pupils tasked with working in groups to use the photographs as the starting point for a virtual tour of the school grounds / local area.

What other simple but effective uses of digital cameras can be added to these suggestions?
