ICT at Lent Rise Secondary School

Posted on | September 6, 2010

Lent Rise Secondary School in Buckinghamshire has been a WebAnywhere customer for the last 3 years. The school is at the cutting edge of ICT, with pupils using their ICT skills in all areas of their work. ICT has even been used to establish links with schools across Europe, Africa and Asia, contributing to the pupils’ cultural awareness.

Lent Rise School Bucks

Lent Rise, Bucks

Lent Rise’s Moodle (Lent Rise Learning World) is widely used by pupils, teachers, parents and governors.

Parents can raise concerns via the VLE and support their child’s learning through regularly checking their child’s targets.

Community cohesion is an integral and fundamental part of the school’s vision. When Lent Rise came to choose the school’s VLE, it was imperative it provided the necessary tools to enable parental engagement. Lent Rise is now determined to ensure these tools are used.

Parents are shown how the school uses ICT and how it can be used within the home or after school to support pupil and family learning. When the school first started to use Moodle only 20% of parents
had broadband access to the internet at home. Now, only 6% do not.

Recently Lent Rise School has decided to opt for Moodle and SIMS integration to enhance their VLE. Integrating the two systems will enable Lent Rise to present parents with
up-to date attendance data on their children and will significantly reduce the administrative duties of the staff.

“WebAnywhere’s Moodle platform is a versatile and flexible way of providing home access to pupil, parents and the school community. WebAnywhere staff are approachable and take into consideration the needs of the individual school when planning and setting up Moodle systems. Pupils, parents and governors all find Lent Rise Learning World a valuable online resource.”

Moodle Moot

Posted on | June 4, 2010

Most Moodle users will probably have heard of the Moodle Moot – a conference dedicated to users, developers and administrators of Moodle.

The Moodle Moot has been around for years with Moots being held all over the world, but for the first time ever, the UK Moot invited exhibitors down to meet the delegates.

Official Moodle Partner

We jumped at the chance to exhibit and learn more about how we can enhance the opportunities Moodle has as a platform for creative teaching. Here’s a picture of our stand in a beautiful hall at the University of London Computer Centre.

Leading Businessman Opens New Office

Posted on | May 12, 2010

Thursday the 15th April proved to be a lot more fun than the average day at work…

After a full weekend of heavy lifting, we had successfully moved into our new office. We didn’t move very far, 25 metres down the corridor from our old office to be precise!

Staff at our new base in Keighley

Sean Gilligan Speaking on the 15th April

After three days of relocating belongings, finding good hiding places and making the new office feel like home we were ready to celebrate. Local renowned businessman Thomas Black kindly offered to come and officially open the new
WebAnywhere premises.

For those of you in the dark Thomas Black is the son of Peter Black, the multi-million pound global manufacturer. Thomas and his brother Gordon took over the business, which employed 800 local residents, and grew it to 300 million before selling it in 2000.

Assessing Pupil Progress with Student Jotter

Posted on | May 10, 2010

Did you know an e-portfolio can be a very useful tool for assessing pupil progress (APP)?

You may have read that APP is most effective when it draws on a broad range of evidence that shows what learners can do independently. You may also be aware the DCFS have stipulated that all schools need to have an e-portfolio integrated into their virtual learning environment by 2010.

Family with a PC

Student Jotter e-portfolio software is ideal for APP as it provides learners with the tools they need for independent learning and provides them with a stage for showcasing this learning. Student Jotter also integrates into Moodle and will soon integrate with other VLEs too.

E-portfolios will benefit your school in many other ways such as:

- Increasing collaborative learning through safe social networking
- Improving parental engagement by encouraging pupils to use their e-portfolio to show their work to their parents
- Complementing your VLE with a more creative, personalised learning tool
- Improving pupils’ ICT skills by seamlessly integrating ICT into all their subjects
- Engaging & motivating your pupils to learn with fun add-ons

Find more about Student Jotter, our e-Portfolios and Secure Social Networking website, which is at studentjotter.com

For help and advice on e-portfolios please call Claire Woof, our e-portfolio specialist on 0800 862 0492.

School Web Design in the U.S.

Posted on | April 22, 2010

WebAnywhere Incorporate in Philadelphia – adding a new school web design division.

In January when all the WebAnywhere staff battled the snowy conditions to come back to work, unfit and tired after Christmas, Sean Gilligan (the big boss) and Matt Coffey (marketing executive) were jetting off to the U.S. to spend two glorious weeks travelling and sight seeing!

I’m told it was a fully packed trip, as they did have to ensure they came back having hired a U.S. Sales Manager for the company and chosen a good location for the U.S. office. However, judging by Matt’s blog they seemed to have some fun at the same time.

Matt and Sean posing next to the first U.S flag they could find!

During the two weeks, they visited Philadelphia, Orlando and Richmond and managed to interview an impressive 27 candidates, as well as viewing office space and meeting with attorneys, accountants and industry contacts.

The trip was immensely valuable, ” said Sean, “not only due to the quality of the candidates we interviewed, but also the huge amount we learned about the U.S. Market and the contacts we made.

The verdict? “We made the decision to set up our U.S. operation in Philadelphia. ” Sean explained “The strength of the candidates, coupled with the population density and transport options in the Philadelphia area, made it the obvious choice for WebAnywhere’s U.S. Headquarters.

We would also like to welcome Shannon DiCandilo on board as our U.S. Sales Manager. Shannon is an ex teacher and University lecturer so knows the market well. When she heard she had got the job her friends took her out for Speckled Hen and fish and chips to celebrate!
